How to use Biaura

How a night, a work block, and a ringing session actually go. What's in the app. What the research says.

What is Biaura?

An iOS app you open when your mind is loud or the room is loud. You pick one sound, set a timer, and let it run. Sleep, Relax, and Focus rows on the home screen. That's the whole idea.

How do I actually use it?

Open the app. Pick Sleep, Relax, or Focus. Tap a card. In the player you set a timer (1 minute to 5 hours, it starts at 30) and a carrier (150 to 480 Hz). The beat itself stays the same when you move the carrier. Hit play. It keeps going if you lock the phone. Save that combo to My Presets if you want it again tomorrow.

Walk me through a night when I can't sleep.

Headphones on. Open Sleep. Start with Sleep. Set the timer for an hour, or 5 hours if you want it until morning. If you usually need a longer runway into deep sleep, pick Deep Sleep instead. Don't stack a second sound. One card. Lights off. If YouTube is the habit, this replaces the hunt.

Walk me through a work block.

You sit down, you lose the sentence. Open Focus. Tap Focus. Twenty or forty minutes is plenty. If you need to stay sharper, High Alert. If the work is narrow and fiddly, Narrow Focus. One sound. Phone face down. When the timer ends, you're done.

What if my thoughts will not stop?

That's the 2am loop, or the 2pm one. Meditation or Clarity. Set 30 minutes. Let one pitch run until you stop arguing with yourself. Relaxation if you want something gentler. Relief if your body is the loud part.

What if the ringing is always there?

Open the noise sounds. Try white, then pink, then brown, then green. Keep the one that covers the ringing. Speakers are fine for this. Leave it on at your desk or in bed. Same for a loud hallway: pick a noise color and let it sit over the room.

Can I play two sounds at once?

No. One sound at a time. That's how a session works. Pick the beat, or the noise, or the rain, or Clarity. Not a stack.

What's the difference between the timer and the carrier?

The timer is how long it plays. The carrier is the pitch of the two tones, 150 to 480 Hz. Changing the carrier does not change the beat. Sleep stays Sleep. You're just choosing a tone that's more comfortable in your ears.

Do I need headphones?

For beats, yes. Each ear gets a different tone, and that's how you hear the beat. Noise, campfire, rain, and Clarity work on speakers. AirPlay is in the player if you want it on a speaker in the room.

Does it keep playing when I lock the phone?

Yes. Background play is built in. Set it, lock it, go.

What are binaural beats?

Two tones, one in each ear. Your brain hears the difference as a beat. That's why headphones. Noise, rain, and Clarity don't need that.

Is Biaura free?

Focus, Relaxation, and Sleep. Everything else is Premium: Deep Sleep, High Alert, Meditation, Narrow Focus, Relief, Creativity, the four noises, campfire, jungle rain, Clarity, and the rest of the catalog.

What's actually in the app?

Beats: Sleep, Deep Sleep, Focus, High Alert, Meditation, Narrow Focus, Relaxation, Relief, Creativity. Noise: white, pink, brown, green. Ambient: campfire, jungle rain. Tones: Clarity. Home is grouped as Sleep, Relax, and Focus so you are not hunting a menu at 2am.

What are presets?

Once a combo feels right (that card, that timer, that carrier), save it to My Presets. Next time you skip the setup.

Why not YouTube?

Because 2am YouTube is mattress ads, fake Hz titles, and an autoplay that yanks you out. Here you pick a card, set a timer, and the session is the session.

How is this different from Calm or Headspace?

Those are voices and stories. This is a frequency you set. No lesson. You pick the card and listen.

Is there research on this?

Yes. Binaural beats have been studied for attention, sleep, anxiety, and pain. The cards in the app match those frequencies. Garcia-Argibay, Santed, and Reales (2019, Psychological Research) ran a meta-analysis of 22 studies. Binaural beats showed a medium effect on attention, memory, anxiety, and pain, and longer listening worked better, which is why the timer goes from 1 minute to 5 hours. Baseanu and colleagues (2024, Applied Sciences) reviewed 12 studies on anxiety and depression. Beats did better than the control conditions. Dabiri and colleagues (2022, Digital Health, PMC9125055) used delta beats and people slept better and woke in a better mood. A 2024 paper in Sleep (zsae097) found dynamic binaural beats cut how long it took to fall asleep compared with silence. Fan, Zhu, Suzuki and colleagues (2024, Scientific Reports) used 0.25 Hz, the same beat as Deep Sleep, and people reached slow-wave sleep faster in daytime naps. Jirakittayakorn and Wongsawat (2018) used 3 Hz, the Sleep card, and saw longer deep sleep and a shorter wait to get there.

Which sound should I start with?

Can't sleep: Sleep. Need the night to go deeper: Deep Sleep. Can't focus: Focus. Thoughts looping: Meditation or Clarity. Ringing or a loud room: try the four noises and keep the one that covers it. Can't settle: Relaxation, or rain, or campfire. One card. Thirty minutes. See how you feel.

Can I use it all night?

Yes. Timer up to 5 hours, or keep it going. Keep the volume comfortable.

Will it work on my iPhone?

iOS 15.1 or later. Also Apple silicon Mac and visionOS. No Android.
